INDOX founders
Professor David Kerr, University of Oxford
Professor David Kerr, CBE is Professor of Cancer Medicine at the University of Oxford. He is also currently President of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) and a member of the Supreme Council of Health, Qatar. Professor Kerr has established a series of major international collaborations. He is the co-founder of the INDOX Cancer Research Network and also the founder of the Africa Oxford Cancer Foundation (AfrOx), a charity which is working to improve the delivery of cancer care in Sub Saharan Africa. Between 2009 - 2010, David took a leave of absence from the University of Oxford to become the Chief Scientist for SIDRA based in Qatar, to help build a collaborative biomedical research network through the Middle East and contribute to improving Global Health. He has an international reputation for research into colorectal cancer and developing new approaches to cancer treatment. He was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2000 and was appointed Commander of the British Empire in 2002.
Professor Vinod Raina, Head of Medical Oncology, Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), New Delhi
Professor Vinod Raina is the Head of Medical Oncology at the Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), New Delhi. He has been the Head of the Delhi Cancer Registry since 2004, was appointed an Honorary Senior Research Fellow of Oxford University for five years from June 2005 and was a WHO Visiting Fellow in USA and Canada 1997. He has led approximately 40 international, institutional, drug company and local research projects. He has authored more than 100 publications in national and international journals. His main interests are breast cancer, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, Lymphomas and Leukemias, Myeloma, transplants and cancer registries. He was Senior Consultant and Head of Oncology, Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman (2001 – 2004); Senior Research Fellow, Medical Oncology and Medicine, Royal Infirmary, Glasgow (1986-1989) and Lecturer and Assistant Professor of Medicine, Al Fateh University, Tripoli, Libya (1980-1986). His awards include: Shiromani award for carrying out simplified and cost-effective stem cell transplants in India, 1995, N.B. Mishra oration on Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in AIMS, 1997, and an oration by Indian Society of Medical and Paediatric Oncology in Pune, 2005. Professor Raina was the co-founder of the INDOX Cancer Research Network.
Dr Raghib Ali, INDOX Director, University of Oxford
Dr Raghib Ali is the Director of the INDOX Cancer Research Network and Clinical Epidemiologist at the Cancer Epidemiology Unit at the University of Oxford. He is also an Honorary Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology, an Honorary Consultant in Acute Medicine at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and the Richard Doll Medical Tutorial Fellow at Green-Templeton College. His main research interests are the aetiology, prevention & treatment of cancer in South Asian and Middle Eastern populations. He is the Principle Investigator for a number of studies in India and for the British Asian Health study. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1999 with a distinction in Medicine and was awarded the John Addenbrookes prize for Medicine. Professor Dame Valerie Beral, Head of Cancer Epidemiology Unit, University of Oxford
Professor Dame Valerie Beral, FRS was made a Dame for her services to science in January 2010. She is Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Oxford and Director of the Cancer Research UK Epidemiology Unit. Her team is looking at how a woman's lifestyle, including her reproductive and family history, can influence her health and whether she is likely to develop breast cancer. Professor Beral studied medicine at Sydney University, Australia. After a few years of clinical work in Australia, New Guinea and the UK, she spent almost 20 years at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine working in the Department of Epidemiology. In 1988 she became the Director of the Cancer Epidemiology Unit in Oxford. Major focuses of her research include the role of reproductive, hormonal and infectious agents in cancer. She is Principal Investigator for the Million Women Study and leads the international collaborative studies of breast, ovarian and endometrial cancer.
Dr Isobel Barnes, INDOX Statistician, University of Oxford
Dr Isobel Barnes is a medical statistician and has been working for the INDOX Cancer Research Network since June 2007. She is based at Oxford University and performs data analyses for the epidemiological studies conducted by INDOX.
Ms Mary Foulkes, INDOX Project Co-ordinator, University of Oxford
Mary Foulkes is a project co-ordinator at INDOX and has been working for the network since 2009. She has responsibility for the INDOX Training and Fellowship Scheme, as well as co-ordinating meetings, communications and general administration.
Dr Toral Gathani, Head of Epidemiology for INDOX, University of Oxford
Dr Toral Gathani is the INDOX Head of Epidemiology and Visiting Research Fellow at the Cancer Epidemiology Unit, University of Oxford. Toral is a Specialist Registrar in General Surgery with a subspeciality interest in breast surgery and she was recently admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Her main research interests lie in breast cancer epidemiology and she received her epidemiology training at the Cancer Epidemiology Unit in Oxford where she completed the work for her doctoral thesis under the supervision of Professor Valerie Beral. She is the principal investigator for the breast cancer case control study and validation study of breast cancer pathology reporting, and a co-prinicipal invesitigator for the colorectal cancer case control study.
Mr Sanjay Gupta, INDOX Coordinator India
Mr Sanjay Gupta has conducted and supervised over 80 clinical trials (including global registration trials, exploratory Phase-II trials, Phase-I trials and investigator initiated trials) across a wide range of therapeutic areas including Oncology, Endocrinology, Psychiatry, Critical Care, Infectious Diseases, Andrology, and Ophthalmology. He has presented his research work in various international journals and conferences including American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), Seminars in Oncology, British Journal of Cancer (BJC), Gastric & Breast Cancer (GBC) and British Journal of Radiology (BJR) and has also authored 5 books. He is the Indian Coordinator for the INDOX Cancer Trial Network which he joined in 2006. As the network coordinator he has been involved in executing the quality initiatives, other activities of the network, and is the first point contact for Indian sites.
Principal Investigators
Dr Neeraj Bhala, University of Oxford
Dr Neeraj Bhala is a Medical Research Council fellow in medicine and epidemiology (population health) at the University of Oxford, as well as being a practising clinician in gastroenterology. He is particularly involved in large-scale studies looking at the benefits and risks of common treatments like aspirin, statins and NSAIDs. Other interests include liver disease, cancer and training in medicine. He is also involved in global health studies, particularly in the UK and the Indian subcontinent.
Dr Raghunadharao Digurmarti, Head of Medical Oncology, Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad
Dr Raghunadharao Digumarti is the Head of Department of Medical Oncology at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad. He established the first Medical oncology department and a comprehensive cancer care centre for the state of Andra Pradesh (1989), established a hospital-based registry (1989) and a subsidised cancer pharmacy (1992). He undertook the first phase 1 in cancer patients for both indigenous and foreign molecules. He has completed over 100 clinical trials since 1993 in all phases. He was the first ACRP Certified Clinical Research Physician in India 2004. He started a DM Medical Oncology Program in 2005, founded the Medical Oncology Forum for the State in 2005, started the Twin Cities Cancer Club 2004, and started the Childhood Cancer Study Group, 2007. He was recognized by the University of Oxford for developing an early phase cancer clinical trials unit. He has collaborated with Breast International Group, Osmania University, CDFD, Central University, ICRISAT in pre-clinical cancer research.
Dr Ragu Titus Chacko, Head of Medical Oncology, Christian Medical College, Vellore
Dr Raju Titus Chacko is Head of Medical Oncology and a consultant at Christian Medical College, Vellore. He has been the co-investigator in more than 30 multicentric international trials and primary investigator in more than 50 multicentric national and international trials. His main research interests are in early drug development, targeted therapy, molecular biology of malignant tumours and early phase trials.
Dr.T.S.Ganesan, Chairman of Cancer Institute, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Cochin, Kerala
Dr T.S. Ganesan is Chairman of the Cancer Institute at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Cochin, Kerala. Previously, he was appointed the first clinician scientist and senior lecturer at the new ICRF Department of Medical Oncology unit at Oxford to set up research programmes in The Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine at the John Radcliffe hospital. He was also a consultant in medical oncology at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford. His major clinical interests are in Phase I & II clinical trials along with tumor specific interest in gynecological malignancies, genito urinary malignancies, Lymphoma and leukemia. His scientific interests are in Cancer genetics and signal transduction. He has published over 100 papers in peer reviewed journals. He is a fellow of the Royal college of Physicians and also achieved a clinical excellence award at Oxford. He has set up the Institute of Molecular Medicine at AIMS and he has also established a laboratory working on cancer stem cells and signal transduction supported by grant's from the Department of Biotechnology(DBT), Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS)and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Dr R. Ravi Kannan is Director of the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Silchar. He was formerly Professor and Head of the Department of Surgical Oncology and Head of the Head and Neck Division of the Cancer Institute (WIA), Chennai.
Dr K.C. Lakshmaiah, Head of the Department of Medical Oncology, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore
Dr.K.C.Lakshmaiah is currently Professor and Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore. After joining as a lecturer in Dept of Medical Oncology in 1990 he has held various posts before becoming the Head of department. He has also worked as a consultant in Haemato-oncology in Assir Central Hospital, King Khalid University Abha, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. As a Principle Investigator he has undertaken more than 30 Trials and has more than 30 publications in national and international indexed journals. He has been invited as an expert for protocol amendment in the Phase I trial BAY 365722 at Barcelona, Spain. He is involved as an expert reviewer for clinical trials submitted to DCGI for approval. Apart from this he has vast experience in conducting Phase I, II and III clinical trials involving breast cancer, gastric cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, multiple myeloma, prostate cancer and other cancers involving bone health. He has also been awarded from the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer as a member of good standing in promoting the study of lung cancer - IASLC University of Colorado, USA in April 2008.
Dr Dasappa Lokanatha, Associate Director, Division of Medical Oncology, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore
Dr Dasappa Lokanatha is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Oncology at the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore. He was previously a Consultant in the Department of Medical Oncology at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre, New Delhi, India (2002 – 2003); and Lecturer (Medical Oncology) at the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore, India (1992 – 2002). He has experience in running phase I, II and III trials – including Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, advanced metastatic breast cancer, mucositis, Febrile Neutropenia and Non-small cell lung cancer.
Prof Dr. Hemant Malhotra, Head of Medical Oncology, Birla Cancer Center, SMS Medical College Hospital, Jaipur
Prof. Dr. Hemant Malhotra is Professor of Medicine & Head of Division of Medical Oncology at the Birla Cancer Center, SMS Medical College Hospital, Jaipur. He set up the Medical Oncology division at the SMS Hospital in 1991, the first in the state of Rajasthan. Very recently, he has established a Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit at the SMS and his team has successfully done the first-ever autologous bone marrow transplantation in the state of Rajasthan. He is an internationally and nationally recognized medical oncologist and was the India, Pakistan & Bangladesh representative to the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) from 2006 to 2008. He is an advisor/consultant/referee/committee member for oncology to several Government of India bodies and head the ICMR committee for formulation of guidelines for multiple myeloma. He has been an invited consultant to the WHO on guideline development for bio-similar oncology molecules. Prof Dr. Malhotra has to his credit more than 200 international and national publications and presentations and is an office bearer and member of many international and national societies and organizations. He is the present secretary of the Indian Society of Medical & Pediatric Oncology (ISMPO).
Professor Mohandas K. Mallath, Dean-Academic, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai
Professor Mohandas K. Mallath currently heads the Department of Digestive Diseases and Clinical Nutrition at Tata Memorial Hospital and is the Dean-Academic of Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai. His major research interests are in developmental therapeutics in digestive cancers, clinical nutrition in oncology, epidemiology and prevention of Digestive Cancers and development of low cost indigenous technologies. He is presently the vice-chairman of Tata Memorial Scientific Committee and honorary senior research fellow in clinical pharmacology at Oxford University and the PI for INDOX at Tata Memorial Centre. He is the convener of the multi-disciplinary gastrointestinal cancer group at Tata Memorial Hospital. Dr. Mohandas is member of over a dozen international and national medical organizations including Indian Society for Cancer Research, American College of Gastroenterology, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Society for Medical Screening, Indian, European and American Societies for Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition and European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society, etc. Dr. Mallath served as the President of the Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (1994-95) and as Council Member of the Indian Society for Gastroenterology and Indian Society for Study of the Liver. He has received several awards for his research paper including Young Investigator Awards at Indian, Asia-Pacific and World Congresses, ESPEN Award at Cannes. His group has presented more than 150 conference papers at various Indian and International Conferences and won several awards. Two of his papers with major public health impact were selected for Press Review among the thousands of papers presented at the Digestive Diseases Week in 2004 and 2007. He has 114 articles indexed in PubMed, and authored 34 book chapters.
Dr Beela Sarah Mathew, Additional Professor, Division of Radiation Oncology, Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum
Dr Beela Sarah Mathew is currently Additional Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum. Her research interests are in developing new approaches for early diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer and treatment of adult brain tumors. She has been involved as co-investigator in 9 and as Principal Investigator in 8 clinical trials with experience in both phase II & III trials.
Dr Chandramohan Krishnan Nair, Associate Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum, Kerala
Dr Chandramohan Krishnan Nair is Associate Professor at the Department of Surgical Oncology, Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum, Kerala, India. His research interests are the genetics, epidemiology, quality of life and health economics of colorectal cancers. His current research includes: Tumour Primordial Cells in Colorectal Cancer: Implications for Surgical Margins and Minimal Residual Disease, sponsored by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India; Translation and validation of EORTC QLQ CR29 questionnaire; and a study of the clinical and pathologic aspects of truncal and extremity soft tissue sarcomas. He is also currently collaborating with INDOX on the INDOX Case-control Consortium.
Dr. Rajiv Ranjan Prasad, Head of Medical Oncology, Regional Cancer Centre, Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sheikhpura, Patna
Dr. Rajiv Ranjan Prasad is Additional Professor & Head of Department at the Regional Cancer Centre, Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sheikhpura, Patna. He has 18 years of experience in medical oncology and has been principal investigator on over 25 multicentric, multinational trials in phase I to III. He has participated in several Government of India & WHO-India initiated programmes as nodal officer. He has established for the first time many facilities related to cancer in the state of Bihar e.g. palliative care and high dose rate brachytherapy. He has several publications and has contributed many Chapters in the Oncology textbooks Published by Churchill Living Stone & Elsevier Press. He has worked as a member of the national task force to formulate the strategy for cancer control in India for the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India. He has also worked as a member of the editorial review board for Conquering Cancer in India, an Indian cancer initiative of the American Cancer Society.
Dr Arumugham Rajkumar, Head of Medical Oncology, G. Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital, Coimbatore
Dr Arumugham Rajkumar is the Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at G. Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital, Coimbatore. His research interests include concurrent chemoradiation in head and neck cancers; utility and feasibility of anato-metabolic imaging in brain tumors and the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in patients with carcinoma stomach. He has experience in phase II and phase III clinical trials. He has received awards for Best Scientific Paper award at the XIV Annual conference of UP Chapter of Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (AROI), Lucknow,2001 and the J.M. Pinto Memorial Award for the Best Paper, 23rd Annual National Conference of Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (AROI), Chandigarh, 2001. The G.Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital joined INDOX in 2009 and Dr Rajkumar is the Principal Investigator. They hope to participate in research with the INDOX network in the future.
Dr Paul Sebastian, Director, Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum, Kerala
Dr Paul Sebastian is the Director of Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum, India (RCC) and is a professor of surgical oncology and head of the Head and Neck Service. Dr Sebastian was instrumental in developing RCC as a major centre for teaching and training in oncology by starting several courses, including MCh Surgical Oncology and the Head and Neck Fellowship programme. His research interests include prevention of head and neck cancer; etiology of oral cancer in young patients; and development of simple, low cost treatment strategies for head and neck cancers suitable for countries with limited resources. He is the principal investigator of several national and international collaborative research projects in head and neck cancer and has 45 peer-reviewed publications in indexed journals to his name. For his contributions, he was awarded the Best Doctor Award by the Government of Kerala in 2008
Dr Atul Sharma, Additional Professor of Medical Oncology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi
Dr Atul Sharma is the Additional Professor of Medical Oncology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. He joined the department in 1992 after finishing his initial training in Internal Medicine. He has the distinction of being the first DM in Medical Oncology from All India Institute of Medical Sciences. His main areas of interest are clinical research in Head and Neck Cancer and GI Cancers. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 papers in peer reviewed journals and presented papers in many national and international meetings including ASCO. He has been involved in about 50 clinical studies (as PI or Co-investigator). Other than solid cancers his interests include; management of lymphoma and leukemia including stem cell transplantations.
Dr Shilin Shukla, Deputy Director, Research and Surgical Services, Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute (GCRI), Ahmedabad
Dr Shilin Shukla is Director and Professor of Medical Oncologyat the Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute (GCRI), Ahmedabad, India. He has 20 years experience as a Medical Oncologist and is currently a member of 4 Medical Research Organisational Committees, working to steer medical research for the benefit of patients as opposed to profit. He is also Author-Editor of the Gujarati Vishwakosh Encyclopaedia (Medical Section) - generating medical literature in Gujarati to help people overcome language barriers in Health. He has published 132 papers/articles in international, national and state journals as well as 11 articles in books. He is currently collaborating with INOX on the INDOX Case-control Consortium and hopes to work with INDOX on other projects in the future.
Dr Balasubramanian Sivanesan, Consultant in Medical Oncology, G. Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital, Coimbatore
Dr Balasubramanian Sivanesan is a Consultant in the Department of Medical Oncology at G. Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital, Coimbatore. He specialises in lung, GIT and gynaecological cancers. His research interests include monoclonal antibodies in colorectal cancers and new molecules in reccurent ovarian cancers. He has experience in phase II and phase III clinical trials over the last 4 years. The G.Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital joined INDOX in 2009 and Dr Sivanesan is Principal Investigator for GIT, lung and gynecological cancers. They hope to participate in research with the INDOX network in the future.
